Are you ready for 2019?

Have you started thinking about your STRETCH, IMPORTANT, AND MUST-ACCOMPLISH goals for 2019?

What do you want?

Do you know how to get what you want in life?

Or, do you avoid goal-setting because you tell yourself:

  • This is just setting me up for failure
  • I never reach them anyway
  • Goals were for life before kids
  • Goals make me feel overwhelmed 
  • I’m in survival mode, thinking I can achieve anything else is crazy

Push Past the (Common) Tendency to Skip the Goals

These apathetic thoughts about goal-setting are SO COMMON.

I hear them from so many of my clients. They want to get back into achieving mode but it just feels defeating, deflating, and futile.

I know I was there for a long time – probably all of my 30s where I just lived day-to-day doing what was expected of me at work and not looking at anything I wanted to conquer past that.

Goal-setting doesn’t have to be overwhelming though.

It doesn’t have to feel like you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Here’s the process that pulled me out of this goal-setting avoidance. I hope it will do the same for you!

These 7 steps will walk you through how to get what you want in life.

Step 1 – What Do You Want?

The first step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to define what you want.

That might sound simple, right?

But, so many of us filter and censor these desires with:

  • Our belief in what’s possible
  • What others expect of us
  • The weight of our responsibilities

This first step is to take all those governors off of our brain and list out everything we want to accomplish, achieve, have and experience.

Don’t limit it by what’s possible. Think about it as if anything were possible.

Step 2 – Pick One and Write Out Your Commitment

The second step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to pick one area of focus for next year.

  • Which of the things from the list above would make the biggest impact for you?
  • Don’t think about if it’s “reasonable”, “responsible”, or “achievable”. 
  • Pick the one you TRULY WANT.

Write out a commitment statement to yourself:

I commit to completing by and I will know I’m finished because .

PRO-TIP: If it causes you to hyperventilate when you think of only PICKING ONE, then you could pick two. Don’t pick more than that, you will cause yourself overwhelm, confusion, and paralysis.

Step 3 – How will you accomplish it? Create your master list.

The third step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to create the plan for how you will accomplish the goal.

Brainstorm everything to create your master list.

Write it all out:

  • Tasks
  • Skills to learn
  • Support you need
  • Dependencies you’d have

Step 4 – What Obstacles Do You Anticipate?

The fourth step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to acknowledge the obstacles you’ll face.

Write it all out:

  • Finances
  • Other people who aren’t supportive
  • Time
  • Knowledge
  • Belief in yourself

Now, for each obstacle, add the actions you need to take to overcome them back to your master list from step 3.

Step 5 – Think About How You Would Show Up If You Already Accomplished This Goal

The fifth step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to think about how you would show up if you already accomplished this goal.

  • How would you show up if you already accomplished this goal?
  • If you don’t know, think about someone you know who has accomplished what you want. How do they show up?

Brainstorm it all out:

  • What would you be doing?
  • What would you NOT be doing?
  • What types of friends and colleagues would you have?
  • How would your relationships look?
  • What would you be wearing?
  • What thoughts would you be having?
  • What kinds of obstacles would you be facing?
  • How would you be pushing past obstacles?

You know the saying “success leaves clues”?

It does.

Look at all your answers and then revisit what you’ve planned out in steps 3 and 4. What do you see that someone who has already accomplished is doing?

PRO-TIP: In order to reach your goal, one key is to act as if you’ve already achieved it

What do you need to add to your lists, to account for the actions and thinking that the person (YOU) who has already achieved your goal is doing?

Step 6 – Schedule It

The sixth step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to schedule it.

Schedule everything you need to do.

For this, I like to write out 12 squares, one for each month,  and then assign the actions from my Master List into one of the 12 boxes.

Then, I refer back to the boxes monthly  as I plan each month’s goals and schedule the required tasks.

Step 7 – Do What You Said You Would

The seventh step for how to get what you want in life, starting next year, is to do what you said you would.

Honestly, the first six steps are easy.

It’s the seventh step that can seriously TRIP YOU UP and prevent you from how to get what you want in life.

In the meantime, here are some highlights:

  • Know you won’t feel like doing most of the stuff, do it anyway.
  • Know your brain will try to trick you into stopping. Keep going anyway.
  • Create a system for yourself to remove as many choices as possible. For example, schedule your day to include all your action items. When you get to the time you said you’d do something, do it.
  • Eat the frog.
  • Manage your mind
